Workplace Bullying is repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators.

It is Abusive Conduct that is: threatening, humiliating, or intimidating, or work interference — sabotage — which prevents work from getting done, or verbal abuse.

Workplace Bullying Advisors offers 3 different approaches to the eradication of abusive conduct. The approach chosen depends on both the size of your organization and its commitment to eradicating costly, but preventable, abusive conduct.

DVD: Writing Workplace Bullying Policy & Procedures

It is imperative that there be a set of clear behavioral standards to which the bullies’ inappropriate conduct can be compared. There needs to be a “line in the sand.” A good policy accomplishes this.

The best policy and enforcement procedures result from a collaborative group writing process. Representatives from the different disciplines and rank levels within the organization should comprise the writing group.

This 2014 DVD is a unique self-guided tour led by Dr. Gary Namie with commentary by David C. Yamada, Professor of Law, Suffolk University. Namie uses a proprietary process of questioning the writing group to clarify values and commitment which are translated into policy and procedures. The group follows the questions and instructions on the DVD. Sample terminology is included to expedite the writing. The final products are thoughtful, comprehensive and compliant policy and procedures, both formal and informal.

Comprehensive
Prevention Program

For mid-size & large employers

The Work Doctor® Blueprint is a comprehensive set of on-site services that enables each client to customize an intervention. Of course, bullying is very costly. The benefits of prevention outstrip the investment in consulting fees. Prevention turns costs into savings.

The Blueprint program approach was developed by incorporating WBI and international research. It is evidence-based. It is focused on workplace bullying and abusive conduct, not conflict resolution or solving “communication” problems.

Clients pick from the menu of program components below.

  • • Prevalence Assessment – surveys
  • • An Anti-Bullying policy written explicitly to mitigate abusive conduct
  • • Enforcement Procedures applicable to all employees at all levels
  • • Training of Internal Expert Team Training sustains the anti-bullying initiative
  • • Includes copy of the DVD Workplace Bullying & Abusive Conduct: The Other Harassment
  • • Integration with Current Metrics and Evaluation Systems

Surveys are customized and enable comparison with the national prevalence tracked by the WBI U.S. Workplace Bullying Survey. We bring the capacity to direct employees to our 3rd party online data collection site. Reports are provided that ensure anonymity of respondents while enabling the pinpointing of problem work sites.

Dr. Namie personally facilitates the assembled writing group that produces both a policy and, equally important, a set of enforcement procedures that make the policy a living document.

A signature component of the full Blueprint program is the preparation of an internal resource group that serves the organization for a long time. We call them the Expert Peer Team. By having several employees, of all ranks and all disciplines, trained in the complexities of abusive conduct, the adopting organization is able to correct problems when they first arise with effective informal techniques. Members receive copies of the books The Bully at Work and The Bully-Free Workplace by the Drs. Namie.

Team members are trained in an evidence-based program called Workplace Bullying University®. University was introduced in 2008 by Drs. Gary and Ruth Namie, founders of the Workplace Bullying Institute. University was, and remains, the only educational program in the U.S. to train professionals about every aspect of the bullying phenomenon.

Prevention hinges on reaching a critical mass of employees familiar enough with abusive conduct’s signs and effects on workers that they informally prohibit the conduct. The Team’s presence combines with repeated instruction, managerial adoption of new codes and policies, and the reversal of historical encouragement of abusive practices to effectively prevent the misconduct.

For all of these reasons, the Namies are recognized as the originators of the Workplace Bullying consulting specialization in the U.S.
